Also known as Chinese chives, Oriental garlic, Asian chives, and Chinese leek, Garlic chives are grown for culinary and ornamental purposes. Unlike onions or other types of garlic, the fibrous bulb of garlic chives is not edible but is grown rather for its flowers and stems

Garlic Chives are grown from a bulb that spreads and forms clumps of tubular leaves 30 -46 cm high and are also very decorative in full bloom.

Thanks to its aromatic properties, chives are widespread in the gardens. The taste is very delicate.

Sow indoors from March and outdoors till September before any danger of frost to come.

Plants can also be grown indoors on a windowsill during the winter months.

General Info

  • One of the most popular culinary herbs with narrow, grass-like leaves giving a mild garlic-like flavor.  

  • It is best cut at the time of use. Some chefs hold a chive seedling in the kitchen so they can be used if necessary without its aromatic properties deteriorating. 

  • Chives can be used in recipes that require the use of raw garlic. It has a more delicate but tasty taste. Leaves are ideal to use for flavoring salads, eggs, potatoes, cheese dips, casseroles, soups or stews.

  • Chives have insect-repelling properties that can be used in gardens to control pests

  • Chives contain potassium, iron, calcium, vitamins A, B, C, and E, magnesium, zinc, and phosphorus.

Days to Maturity: 45 days from germination

Planting Depth: 1 cm

Plant Spacing: 15 cm: 35 cm

Soil Preference: 70% Cocopeat 10% Vermiculite 5% Perlite 15% Plant Compost.

Temp Preference: Ideal temperatures are 15°C to 30°C 

Light Preference: Full sunlight

Germination Days: 10 – 15 days 

  1. Prepare your soil mix and put your seeds at 1 cm depth.

  2. Spray the seeds and cover them with a plastic case to accelerate the germination process, don’t forget to make holes in the plastic case for the seeds to breathe.

Harvesting

  • Can be harvested continuously once mature. Leaves can also be dried for later use.

  • Use scissors to cut the chives leaves or cut the whole plant depending on the quantity of use.
