The Batavian lettuce Sveva Cortese is a relatively new variety, having been bred by Sativa Seeds Italy in the early 2000s. It is a cross between the Batavian lettuce varieties Batavian Blonde de Paris and Batavia Reine des Glaces. The goal of the breeding program was to develop a Batavian lettuce variety that was resistant to lettuce tipburn, a common physiological disorder that can cause the leaves of lettuce plants to become brown and necrotic at the tips.
Sveva Cortese was released to the market in 2005 and has quickly become a popular variety among both commercial and home growers. It is known for its excellent taste and texture, as well as its resistance to lettuce tipburn and other diseases.
