Help me Cultivate

Start by cultivating one or two types of seeds for trial and learning before cultivating many seeds. (Visit our blog on our website to increase your knowledge on cultivation)

If you have the following available, you are ready to start growing vegetables right away:

  • Vegetable Seeds: Choose the type of seeds you want to grow and buy them from a trusted source. Make sure you choose the proper type according to the right season they grow best in. Each plant differs in their requirements, in terms of germination and growth conditions and the method of fertilization.
  • Fertilizers and Nutrients: Plants need them to supply nutrients for healthy and fast growth.
  • Sunlight: The plant needs it to complete the process of photosynthesis, so there must be full bright sunlight during the day in the area where the vegetables will be grown.
  • Pots: Make sure the pots have holes at the bottom for good drainage and to avoid root rot. Their sizes and shapes will vary according to the size of the plants to be grown.
  • Soil/Growing Media: Different types of growing media can be used, and it is preferable to choose a good type of soil that is free from any pollutants that might hinder the seed’s growth.

In case there is no full bright sunlight during the day in the area designated for cultivation, it is possible to try growing microgreens, which are easy to cultivate, with high nutritional value and fast-growth rate that do not need sunlight.

Microgreens are plants at a very young age between 8 to 21 days, and their length ranges between 5 to 15 cm, depending on their type.

Inside the seeds are all the beneficial nutrients of the plant, but the human body cannot digest the seed itself.

Therefore, we put the seed, which contains the embryo, in suitable conditions to germinate, and the embryo begins to activate and transform the nutritional elements into another form that is easier for the humans to digest. Thus, all the nutritional elements of the seed are concentrated in the form of a small plant that we can harvest, eat and benefit from.

Research has shown that when equal amounts of microgreens and its counterpart of the large plant are compared for the same type of vegetable, the microgreens contain more nutrients, vitamins and salts as those found in its counterpart of the large plant, estimated at about 10 to 40 times.

The benefit of the microgreens are plenty according to their type:

  • It has a high percentage of potassium, iron, copper and zinc and is rich in antioxidants and other minerals
  • Strengthens the body’s immunity
  • Broccoli treats stomach germs and reduces the risk of some cancers
  • Red cabbage improves cholesterol and the heart functions.

Other features:

  • Quick to harvest
  • You don’t need sunlight
  • You don’t need any fertilizer
  • Perfect replacement for large vegetables

We provide a microgreen kit, which is a full cultivation solution for growing microgreens. Each kit contains the following:

  • 2 bags of soil
  • 2 bags of seeds of your choice (each bag 10 grams)
  • culture box
  • Agricultural instructions card (in Arabic and English)

This kit is easier to use and more economical than buying seeds alone.

The price of 10-grams microgreen seeds is 85 EGP.

However, the price of the microgreen kit with all its components is 170 EGP, and you can choose two types of seeds instead of one.

No, the microgreens are germinated and harvested only once, and after using them, other seeds are planted, and so on.

  • Concentrations vary according to the amount of plant compost in the mixture.
  • The plant compost is an organic material that increases soil fertility, and your choice should depend on the aim of use.
    • The 15% concentration is suitable for germinating your seeds or using it with young seedlings.
    • The 30% concentration is suitable for trees and plants of an old age and should not be used to germinate seeds.
  • Prepare your soil mixture and add it to the pot.
  • You can mix with it some types of organic fertilizers, such as plant compost but make sure it does not exceed 15%.
  • Water the soil until fully wet, then wait for a couple of minutes to drain all excess water.
  • Plant the seeds 1 cm deep in the soil and make sure the seed is completely covered with the soil.
  • Irrigate the soil by spraying, not pouring water heavily, so that it does not affect the location of the seed in the soil or uncover the layer of soil above it.
  • Cover the pot with a plastic bag to retain humidity and stimulate seed germination.
  • Make a few small holes in the bag for the seeds to breathe and to avoid mold.
  • Leave them indoors or in the dark until they begin to germinate.
  • When the length of the plant reaches around 4 cm, place it under any bright light and make sure that there is good ventilation, but from behind the window, don’t put it outdoors.
  • Water the plants if the soil is dry.
  • Take good care of them until they reach the size of a long, strong and healthy seedling, then transfer to a larger pot.
  • Buy oxygen water (hydrogen peroxide) from the nearest pharmacy and use it on roots or soil infected with mold, and it will disappear.
  • Put a 20 cm syringe on a liter of water and spray the infected spots.
  • The plant is a living organism, it adapts to the environment it lives in, so when we change its environment from the nursery and put it in another environment (at home), the plant gets severely affected and puts it into a state of shock, so the plant needs to adapt once again to the new environment.
  • This causes the plant’s death, so you must carefully put the plant in a moderately bright place (if it is an ornamental plant) and strong sunlight (if it is a vegetable) and give it its nutritional needs of fertilizers and others. Also carefully irrigate the plant so that it is not exposed to drought, stress or excessive irrigation.
  • Of course, during winter, the irrigation rate is lower than the summer, because the soil dries slower.
  • The soil might be dry at the surface but wet at the roots, so be sure before you water again.
  • To make sure that the soil is completely dry from top to bottom, use a thin wooden stick, commonly used in the kitchen, and stick it into the soil. If it is wet, wait and do not irrigate for a while. Irrigate only when the soil is completely dry.

Note: There is a difference between a dry soil and a stressed soil due to the lack of water.

It is not recommended to leave the soil without water for a long time.

To get your answer, make this simple test:

  • Put a handful of sand in a cup of vinegar:
    • If no eruption occurs, the sand is suitable for growing vegetables without any problem
    • If an eruption occurs, the salinity concentration in the soil is high and we cannot grow vegetables in it. In this case, we can plant in pots and dispense the sandy land.
  • Note: Sand is a medium that lacks nutrients because sand is chemically inert by nature, so even after testing and making sure that there is no high salinity, we must add compost to it to increase its fertility, and we carefully fertilize once every 10 days.
  • Hydroponics is the future of sustainable agriculture that saves an extremely large amount of space, time and water.
  • Hydroponics depends on growing the plant directly in water.
  • By eliminating the role of the soil, the seeds germinate in soil substitutes.
  • When they reach the size of large seedlings, they are transferred to the hydroponic systems, so the roots become floating in water to which the nutrient solution is added.
  • All hydroponic systems are designed in a way that makes it easy for oxygen to reach the plant’s roots, so that it does not cause rotting or death of the roots in the water.
  • Hydroponics increases the quality of the plant because the plant’s nutrition is concentrated as it absorbs the nutrients required for growth directly from the water.

Currently we have different systems available:

  • DWC (Deep Water) System
    • Capacity: 50 liters and it produces 6 full plants
    • Capacity: 15 liters and it produces 4 full plants
  • NFT System (Tubes System)
    • 3 tubes and it produces 15 full plants
  • Dutch Bucket System is used for the cultivation of fruiting plants
    • 6 containers and it produces 6 full plants

(Solution number #1)

Nutrient solutions are used according to the type of seeds grown and the specified EC for each type of vegetables.

  1. Know the right EC range for the plant you want to grow. (The ranges are available on our website’s blog)
  2. Take the average of the minimum and maximum of the EC range to get just one result.
  3. Change the EC to TDS using the following equation:

1 EC = 640 ppm (TDS)

  1. Measure the volume of water in your tank because you will use it later.
  2. Measure the TDS of the water used in your tank because you will use it later.
  3. Subtract step #5 from step #3, the result will be the difference in TDS required to add to the water.
  4. Change the TDS to milliliters using the following equation:

1 ml = 400 ppm (TDS)

  • To change, divide step #6 with 400, to calculate the amount of nutrient solution required to add to every liter.
  • The result is in milliliters for each liter of water, so we need to multiply it to the whole amount of water in our tank
  1. Multiply step #7 to the total amount of water used in the tank (step #4) and you will get the total amount of nutrient solution needed to add.

Notes:

  1. EC is electric conductivity
  2. TDS is the total dissolved substances
  3. Ppm is part per million
  4. Ppm is the measuring unit of the TDS
  5. The amount calculated in tep #8 will be added from Solution A and Solution B

Example:

  1. EC for lettuce i between 0.8 and 1.2
  2. Their average is (0.8+1.2)/2 = 1
  3. Using the given equation, (1*640)/1 = 640 ppm
  4. Assuming the volume of water in the tank is 20 liters
  5. Assuming the TDS of the water in the tank is 200 ppm
  6. After subtracting, the result is 640 – 200 = 440 ppm
  7. Using the given equation, 440/400 = 1.1 milliliters of nutrient solution for each liter
  8. But since I have 20 liters in the tank, then 20*1.1 = 22 milliliters from Solution A and Solution B

(Solution number #2)

Nutrient solutions are used according to the type of seeds grown and the specified EC for each type of vegetables.

  1. Know the right EC range for the plant you want to grow. (The ranges are available on our website’s blog)
  2. Take the average of the minimum and maximum of the range to get just one result.

  4. Use the following equation to plug in the numbers to get the required amount of nutrients required to be add:

  • The amount of nutrient solution required * the concentration of the nutrient solution used per ml = The total amount of water in the tank * The difference in the TDS required

Example:

  7. The concentration of the nutrient solution used per ml (by Harraz Farm and Garden) = 400 ppm
  8. The amount of nutrient solution required to add * 400 = 20 * 440
  9. The amount of nutrient solution required to add = (20*440)/400 = 8800/400 = 22 milliliters from Solution A and Solution B
